Nairobi, September 22

The Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader and 2022 presidential hopeful, Musalia Mudavadi, displayed high level ignorance after failing to debunk the challenges facing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

While appearing on Citizen TV's News Night show hosted by award-winning journalist, Waihiga Mwaura, on Tuesday, September 21, Mr Mudavadi was unable to debunk the challenges facing the new education system.

When asked to give his thoughts on CBC, Mr Mudavadi was inconclusive and seemed lost in translation.

"One viewer has pestered me with this question and he wants to know what is your take on the CBC system of education," asked Mr Mwaura.

In his response, the ANC party leader seemed to beat around the bush with no conclusive answer or understanding of the curriculum.

"It is very complicated. And one thing that is clearly coming out is that there was no proper stakeholder consultation," stated the presidential hopeful.

"We are going to face quite a serious crisis as we will have a double intake in 2023 and 2024 and this will call for massive investment. There is no proper infrastructure."

Unable to properly dissect the current crisis and issues raised by parents including the cost of the education system, Mr Mudavadi chose to address the perennial problems that have affected the education sector such as school fires.

"All these things you see in Sigalame and Ofafa Jericho (referring to the September 20 fires in the two schools), are going to be there and will be very costly. Some schools have no infrastructure and we will need to invest in that."

The CBC system of education has created a rift between the Ministry of Education and stakeholders with the latter accusing the government of rushing the implementation without taking the necessary steps.

This has led to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and other interested parties to file a petition in court seeking to have further implementation of the curriculum stopped.

LSK President, Nelson Havi, and the High Court of Kenya advocate, Esther Ang'awa, have asked Chief Justice Martha Koome to constitute a five-bench team of judges to hear and determine the petition.
