Abdulswamad Extends Lead as Sonko Drops in Latest Poll

The race to succeed Mombasa Governor Hassan  Joho has taken shape after Infotrack released another opinion poll focusing on the Coast region which has been classified as one of the key battlegrounds.

In the poll, ODM’s Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir is the most popular candidate in the Mombasa gubernatorial contest with 50 percent of the voters backing him.

The survey has placed Nassir ahead of Wiper's candidate Mike Sonko, who would garner 20 percent of the votes.

This comes even as former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's political career has a slim chance of surviving.

On July 20,  the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has urged the Supreme Court to review their decision to uphold his impeachment.

Haji stated that the grounds on which Sonko has chosen to pursue his case are not very strong despite him having the right to do so.

The polls also placed former Mombasa Senator, Hassan Omar, a distant third with 1 percent.

In Taita Taveta County, Andrew Mwadime vying as an independent candidate maintained the lead at 24 percent compared to the incumbent Granton Samboja.

Samboja will be defending his seat for the second term under the Jubilee Party.

The Infotrack poll, showed that UDA's candidate John Mruttu would garner 11 percent while  former senator Dan Mwazo was rated at 7 percent.

In Lamu County,Ex-Governor Issa Timamy is the most preferred candidate with a poll rating of 33 percent ahead of the incumbent  Fahim Twaha who  is seeking to defend his seat in the August 9 polls.

Governor Fahim served for three terms (15 years) as MP for Lamu west from 1998 to 2013.

Locals in Lamu County are looking out for a candidate who will promise them prompt land ownership policies and provide a convincing workable agenda towards that.

If elections were held today, the incumbent Godhana Dhado would be elected as the gorvenor for Tana River County after 35 percent of the voters endorsing his bid as compared to the former Governor Hussein Dado who received a support of 19 percent.

Meanwhile, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance presidential candidate Raila Odinga dominates in all the six Coastal counties as compared to his main competitor William Ruto.

In mid July, 50 percent of the voters in the coast would prefer Raila Odinga presidency than Ruto who only could be voted by 29 percent of the voters within the same period.

Raila, however, decreased by 1 percent to 49 percent in the polls conducted early July as well as Ruto falling by 2  to 27 percent.

The Coast Region has become a major battleground for Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Coalition and Kenya Kwanza Alliance of Deputy President William Ruto.

The two leading coalitions have made numerous visits to the region in an effort to sway the voters. Regardless, Coast is still perceived to be one of Odinga’s strongholds.
