Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been a busy man, creating a backup plan for himself in the event that he is not chosen as running mate in the Azimio One Kenya Coalition.

It is reported that he intends to be on the ballot come August 9, and has sent out a team of his allies across the country to lay down the foundation of his bid.

The team revealed to the Standard that they have already collected 2000 signatures from 24 counties in accordance with the requirements of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission guidelines that will allow him to contest in the polls.

Further, the team made up of Wiper Party legislators has assured that the signature collection will be complete by the close of business of Friday, May 13 and a National Management Council will endorse the move.

Already, Wiper Party National Executive Council is in agreement to have the former VP as a presidential candidate and on Monday, May 9 unanimously endorsed a proposal to have him bargain for a  post-election agreement in the event that he fails to garner the 50 plus one votes to secure him the positions.

In fact, Kalonzo's prior decision to not attend the Azimio running mate interviews stemmed from discussions made during the party's NEC meeting, urging him to tread the journey alone.

Kalonzo however changed tune midway and agreed to attend the interviews, claiming that he did not want to give anyone an excuse to say that he blatantly declined to come forward.

“We agreed that the signature collection should start immediately and be complete by Thursday; we are looking ahead. We cannot be begging all the time. We are ahead of the game,” said Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Junior, who is among those steering the Kalonzo presidential campaign.

He assured that they were yet to settle on the former VP's running mate but were keen on making sure that they beat the May 16 deadline set by the IEBC where presidential aspirants are required to submit the names of their deputies.

Constitutional lawyer Boby Mkangi has also reiterated that Kalonzo was in the clear to vie for the presidency, despite his agreement with Raila Odinga in the Azimio One Kenya Coalition.

“As long as he satisfies the constitutional requirements, which I believe he does, his being in Azimio or having endorsed someone else cannot tie him down,” said Mkangi.

If he is not chosen as running mate, it will be all systems go in the Wiper Party to ensure that their candidate has amassed enough support to trounce Deputy President William Ruto or Raila Odinga who according to opinion polls are neck to neck in the race to State House.
