FORMER PRIME MINISTER RAILA ODINGA FILE:COURTESY

Raila Odinga is expected to make a state  of the Nation Address

.

“On August 9th, 2022,millions of Kenya attempted to choose their leaders, but yesterday August 15th, our budding democracy suffered a major set back as a result Kenya faces grave legal and political crisis as a result of Mr.Chebukati’s actions

The constitution and laws are clear about how the IEBC should conduct its elections.

“He said the most important role of IEBC is the conduct of transmission and tallying of elections”

IEBC has previously 2017 plunged the country into darkest chapters whose memories are still fresh.

In 2017, supreme court nullified the elections conducted by the ABC “what we saw yesterday was a blatant disregard of the constitution and laws of Kenya by Mr.Chebukati and a minority of IEBC commissioners”

The IEBC is a structured and democratic institution that should make decisions only on any matter either by consensus or voting. Unless a unanimous decision is reached any matter shall be arrived at after a majority of commissioners agree. The chair should not rule unilaterally.

The prime minister went ahead to quote the Maina Kiai case which ruled that the people of Kenya do

not vest such powers in an individual.

The prime minister claimed that only Chebukati had access to the final tally which he used to announce the president-elect which is unconstitutional and contrary to the law.

“The figures announced by Mr.Chebukati are null and void…..In our view, there is no legally declared president-elect”

Shortly before the address by the former Prime minister, the four iebc commissioners protesting the results also held a press briefing at Serena Hotel.

The address happened in Kenya International Conference Centre(KICC) at the Azimio Media Centre.

Raila’s Azimio team has contested the results led by their chief agent Kanchory Saitabao even before the official was made by the IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati.

Raila last addressed the public on Sunday 14th August at St. Francis church in Karen in the company of other politicians such as Martha Karua and Gideon Moi.
